HONG KONG ON A BUDGET 2018: TIPS AND TRICKS

How cheap can you get in Hong Kong?
Hong Kong is the place you can get cheap airfare, but did you know it's one of the most expensive places to live in? This post aims to maximize your travel budget for Hong Kong-- suggest possible places to visit, food to try, activities to enjoy and cheap hotels to stay in. These travel tips concerns all hotels, meals and activities except airfare.

There are a lot of cheap flights going to and from Hong Kong, namely Air Asia and Cebu Pacific Air, and Hong Kong is a visa-free destination for Filipinos. The next concern would be how much pocket money is needed for the trip: plan ahead of the trip. From there on you can remove or add activities to lessen you expenses.

1. BOOKING ACCOMMODATION IN ADVANCE
Aside from the activities, this would take up almost half of your budget and booking in advance can save a few bucks. Cheapest hotels are located in Kowloon area, specifically Tsim Tsa Tsui.

Cheapest Accommodation:
Dhillon Hotel, Hong Kong, Hong Kong via Agoda, starts at 1000PHP
Marigold Hostel, Hong Kong, Hong Kong via Agoda, starts at 1100PHP
New London Hostel, Hong Kong, Hong Kong via Agoda, starts at 1100PHP

You can search more hotels here:

2. BOOKING ACTIVITIES IN ADVANCE

HK Sim Card VS Pocket Wifi
Both products have great advantages. For a short trip, buying a sim card would be a cheaper choice if you would only use it for occasional online posting and navigation.  You can always reload at any convenience store and have yourself assisted in claiming data promos. On the other hand, a pocket wifi would be also be for a long term stay and price depends on how many days you're going to use it.

4G HK Sim Card -  Hong Kong Airport Pick-up via Klook starts at 350PHP

4G Pocket Wifi - Hong Kong Airport Pick-up via Klook starts at 120PHP per day

If you're going for the cheapest option, I would suggest not buying any. But how would you explore HK, right? I always book hotels with wifi. This way I can research beforehand which trains, buses and routes I should take for the whole day. If by any chance you get lost, you can always ask the locals. There's not much to worry about since there's little to no language barrier, almost all people in Hong Kong can speak English. Just in case you really need the sim card, you can purchase it in a local convenience store.

MTR Pass
Buying a tourist pass would save you a few bucks but it will come in handy especially when roaming around Hong Kong. It can be use for trains, buses as well as food (vending machine)!

MTR Pass via Klook starts at 440PHP per day

 3. FREE ATTRACTIONS
The best things in life are free, right? These places are a few of the free places you can see in Hong Kong.

Sight-seeing in Hong Kong Central

Enjoy the view at Victoria Peak

Other places to visit for free are The Hong Kong Clock Tower located at Tsim Sha Tsui, Symphony of Lights at Kowloon Side, the Avenue of Stars, and window shopping at the Ladies Market.

4. MUST VISIT PLACES

The Hong Kong Disneyland is one of the notable places in the island. Kids and kids at heart can both enjoy the rides and shows.

The Hong Kong Ocean Park is another worthwhile experience. It is an all-in-one theme park with rides, shows, oceanarium, wildlife park. Both theme parks offer different set of exciting rides, shows and features.

Book your activities with the code MOBILE10 for a 10HKD off on your first booking on the mobile app.

5. FOOD
The breakfast meal: this would be my optional meal especially if you wake up late-- so you only take your brunch. But if you're planning to have a jammed packed stay in Hong Kong, I suggest book your accommodation with breakfast or have a cheap meal along small stalls around Tsim Sha Tsui. You may opt to eat along food market or stalls along the streets for your lunch and dinner too. These are the homes of HK cuisine!

  1. I think Marrigold Hostel is quite strategic, because it just needs little walking on foot to the nearest train station :)

    1. Thanks Blair! Those temples surely are free, but we also have a little girl with us who would appreciate Disneyland or Ocean Park more than the temples! But thank you for the notes! Will definitely keep that in mind. :)
